THE KLEZMATICS: WOODY
GUTHRIE'S HAPPY JOYOUS HANUKKAH TOUR Monday, Dec. 4 @ 7:30
p.m.
The Klezmatics have forever
transcended genres: blending klezmer with aching shtetl melodies, raucous Latin
stomps, wild jazz riffs and provocative Arabic, African, American and Balkan
rhythms. The Klezmatics will present a contagious celebration of Hanukkah,
marrying their soulful and ebullient Jewish roots to Woody Guthrie's poignantly
mesmerizing and newly discovered lyrics. This program highlights their two most
recent CD releases: the multicultural folk sounds of Wonder Wheel and
the ecstatically danceable, hoedown-worthy Woody Guthrie's Happy Joyous
Hanukkah. Special guests: acclaimed Celtic singer Susan McKeown and
multi-instrumentalist Boo Reiners. Tickets: $20

LIFE ON THE
LOWER EAST SIDE PHOTOGRAPHS BY REBECCA
LEPKOFF: 1937 - 1950 Exhibition
open from November 20 through December 29, 2006
Thursday, Dec. 7, 6 - 8 p.m. Opening exhibition
reception and signing of the newly published monograph Life on the Lower
East Side - Photographs by Rebecca Lepkoff, 1937 - 1950, by Princeton
Architectural Press.
Life on the Lower East
Side, the first monograph of Lepkoff's work, highlights the lost
neighborhood between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges from the Bowery to the
East River. With over 170 beautifully reproduced duotone photographs and essays
by Peter Dans and Suzanne Wasserman, the book reveals the dynamic community of
Italians, Irish, Jews, Greeks, Spaniards, Chinese, Puerto Ricans, and African
Americans. Lepkoff's images uncover a forgotten time and place and reveal how
the Lower East Side has both stayed the same and changed forever.
